Plans for the UK’s first ever Veggie Fringe week are advancing rapidly, with the dates announced for the week long series of talks, demos, films, entertainment, information, free tasters and food, all of it 100% vegan, in the run up to Europe’s biggest veggie event in Bristol on May 27th – 29th VegfestUK Fringe week aims to bring together leading health stores, campaigners, groups and individuals in Bristol to raise the profile of the veggie/vegan lifestyle across the city, with a series of events in the week beginning May 21st, right through to the main event outdoors in the Amphitheatre on May 27th – 29th . VegfestUK Bristol Fringe week coincides with National Vegetarian Week, organised by The Vegetarian Society.
The week begins in Bristol with a couple of parties to get things off to a swing, with a club night and opening party at Canvas Nightclub featuring original Bristol house night Club Yeyo with local underground legends Smith and Mighty on the decks on Saturday May 21st, and continues in style with an evening with the Bristol Classical Indian Orchestra and the Asian Arts Agency in the Colston Hall followed by a vegan dinner at top Bristol restaurant Kathmandu.
Then on every day starting Monday 23rd May, there are free talks and a cinema from 1pm – 5pm at The Polish Club (Bristol BS8 1LP) hosted Mike from Wild Oats. The talks cover a wide variety of health, animal welfare and environmental issues, and the cinema includes a series of food and health related films. And there is a programme of free Cookery Demos and films from 2pm – 5pm downstairs at Café Kino (Bristol BS1 3RU), featuring Helen and Jane from Europe’s biggest veggie pressure group Viva! on Monday and Thursday, as well as guests on other days all demonstrating quality vegan recipes.
There are also stalls outside Wild Oats and other leading health stores across Bristol during the week, with free tasters and samples of vegan food along with free information about all aspects of this fast growing healthy lifestyle choice. And many shops, restaurants and businesses will be running special promotions, menus, discounts and themed evenings all week too.
The evening events continue on Monday May 23rd with a kids and adults party hosted by Bristol Vegans, featuring cake and chocolate, fun games and magic for adults and kids alike, at The Polish Club from 6pm – 10pm, and on Tuesday, again at The Polish Club from 7pm – 11pm, an event with Bristol Friends of the Earth and Wild Oats centered around Food including music and entertainment. Wednesday sees a Film Night at Café Kino with Bristol Animal Rights Coalition from 7pm – 11pm, and Thursday May 26th is Performance night, in association with Viva!, including a first performance of ‘Beef’ a new play written by vegan playwright and actor Jonathon Brown that deals with vegan issues, along with the Touch and Go theatre company, again at The Polish Club from 7pm – 11pm. The evening events are fundraisers and a small admission charge will be made on entry.

VegfestUK Bristol Fringe Week May 21st – May 28th 2011 Fringe week runs from Saturday May 21st up to the big outdoor event May 28th/29th and includes smaller events every evening and talks, demos, stalls and sampling during the day. All food, drink at the Fringe events is vegan, although veggie info and leaflets are available as well as vegan info. Aims
- Promote the vegan and veggie lifestyle
- Attract new people, especially those unlikely to attend the Fayre
- Raise the profile of leading Bristol veggie/vegan (VV) groups including BARC, Viva!, Bristol Vegans, the Raw Community
- Integrate other related groups into the activities,
- Promote VegfestUK Bristol main event May 28th 29th
- Fundraise for VegfestUK and other groups involved
- Raise profile of local businesses providing for the VV lifestyle
- Encourage Bristol to buy and consume locally produced vegan food
- Raise profile of main national VV groups including Viva!, The Vegan Society, Animal Aid and The Vegetarian Society
- Unite grass roots activists and sympathisers in Bristol on joint project
- Enhanced media coverage national and local for VV lifestyle
Activities
During the day (free events)
- Discounts from local shops for vegan produce
- Stalls outside Wild Oats (Redland) with vegan samples and information, plus goody bags and raffle tickets on sale for VegfestUK
- Discounts and special menus from restaurant and cafes/juice bars
- Talks and Films in Clifton (The Polish Club) – from 1pm – 5pm, includes 2 talks & 1 film, tasters, info, hosted by Mike Abrahams (Wild Oats)
- Cookery Classes at Café Kino 2pm – 5pm (free drop in sessions), hosted by various chefs including Helen and Jane from Viva! (Monday and Thursday)
- Other stalls, activities, school visits to be coordinated
- Local groups welcome to organise and publicise their own events free through Fringe week
During the evening (pay events)
- Saturday 21st - Club Yeyo nite at Canvas (St Nicks Market) 10pm – late (House party featuring Bristol DJ’s from ‘back in the day’ including Smith and Mighty Admission £10
- Sunday 22nd – Bristol Indian Classical Orchestra Music evening with Asian Arts Agency 6pm – 9pm (music, snacks). – admission £12
- Monday 23rd Adults/Kids Party with Bristol Vegans + cake and chocolate, The Polish Club Clifton 6pm – 10pm Admission Adults £5
- Tuesday 24th Food evening , The Polish Club Clifton 7pm – 11pm Admission £6
- Wednesday 25th Film Nite with BARC, Café Kino 6pm – 10pm Admission £5
