Friends of The Earth push the vegan message

Within our grasp is the support of the UK's most powerful environmental organization. Activeg are asking us all to act on this issue
The vegan community has long understood the grave issues concerning meat consumption on many aspects of the environment. With the high profile emergence of the Global Warming as the pressing issue facing the planet, the role of livestock has at last started being examined with vigor. The UN's ground-breaking report last year has moved the devastating impact of our animal-based diets into the media's consciousness. But although we have understood the issues in great details for a long time, the general public is just getting the faintest idea that the diet they have been raised on may have enormous consequences for us all. We should never under-estimate the challenge in changing one's diet. The voice of the vegetarian community is relatively weak compared with other campaigning groups. But when one of the big guns steps forward to enormously amplify our concerns, it is difficult to ignore that opportunity. That chance has appeared and we must act upon it, not just for the animals, but for the whole planet that every species relies on. Friends of the Earth (FoE) has, for the first time, started to speak on the "Meaty Issue". Earthmatters, the FoE members' magazine, has at last openly questioned its readership on their diet. The importance of FoE's involvement in this issue cannot be over emphasised. We must support them, and save the planet from the blight of meat and dairy diets. FoE have a voice so much stronger than the vegetarian community and are so widely respected. Please Use it. If FoE raises the huge environmental impact of animal farming, the other green organisation will follow. What you can do * Join FoE. If FoE delivers on this issue in response to support from members, then we will have hope in combatting global warming and reducing the suffering of all animals in the process. * If you are already a member then increase your donation. * Contact them and tell them why you have joined or increased your donation and praise them for what has been a difficult decision for them. * Now complete the FoE meat survey. You can only do so as a member. Thanks, you are really helping to saving the planet, all the life on it, and millions animals for a miserable life in farming. This story has been released by Activeg

Sainsbury's is dropping vegan labelling
Wasn't it great that Sainsbury's were labelling their own brand products vegan if they were? Well, now it seems they won't be.
The best course of action would be to tell them how useful it was, how it affected our shopping habits, and how disappointed we are that they will no longer be doing so. Let's all ask them to reconsider, as maybe we just didn't say how much we appreciated it enough. There are many ways to contact Sainsbury's, but a written communication is most likely to get passed on.

Sainsbury's have now issued a statement apologising for any confusion and reiterating its policy on vegan labelling as:
"It is Sainsbury's policy to label products that are suitable for vegans, as 'suitable for vegetarians and vegans', using the Sainsbury's vegetarian and vegan logo.
The only exceptions are those groups of products which are obviously vegan (and where our vegan customers have indicated that labelling is unnecessary). Examples include plain waters, unseasoned flours, plain fruit and veg. The position of the logo on packs may differ from product to product due to different pack formats and the presence of other key customer messages."
It is not known whether the company have backtracked on their initial plans of removing labelling or whether it was a genuine mistake on their part. Irrespective of whether it was a mistake or the company are backtracking, it can only be welcome news that vegan consumer power would appear to have been successful.
In an era when more people are turning to an ethical and healthier diet it is important that companies and supermarkets provide packaging that takes into account the increasing numbers of people turning to a non animal based diet. The direction that SainsburyĆ¢€™s were allegedly going to take would have been a retrograde step and could have set a dangerous precedent.
